When Joan develops Alzheimer's disease and her husband, Barry, finally and reluctantly admits her to a care facility, the Home, her twin sister, Francie, tries, not often successfully, to reach her through photographs of their past, childhood games, a trip to the beach. It seems that Joan is lost in a terrifying limbo. But her life is not over.
Joan & Bella is one of a trilogy of novellas, Extraordinary Loves, about those rare close human relationships that fall outside the category of conventional romance.
Joan Bella Extraordinary Loves edition by Ann Elwood Health Fitness Dieting eBooks
Contemporary literature about Alzheimer's and other dementias is often non-fiction written from the perspective of a beleaguered and heartbroken caregiver. In rare fictional treatments also, the narrative is provided by someone standing outside the broken and failing brain. The experience of that brain, that person, is not pleasant to imagine and so is left unexplored. Usually. But in JOAN AND BELLA, Ann Elwood steps into that disquieting realm to describe the experience of Joan Armour, whose husband and daughter have just placed her in a care facility. Joan has some unspecified form of dementia. At times frightening (to us), at times humiliating (to us), Joan's reveries are nonetheless imbued with a dreamlike poesy suggesting the existence of a doppelgänger, another self. Joan's life heretofore has been rational, circumscribed, constrained by the strictures of her time. In the cognitive ruin that will be her last experience of life, Joan stretches to enjoy a world outside the rules, because the rules are gone. What remains is a residual confusion trumped by an awareness of artful images - cut grass bleeding green, cars roaring like angry animals, a gentle minuet with a boy who escorts her back to the "home" after she wanders into a bar. And the nurturing, inchoate friendship she shares with Bella, who also inhabits the shifting world of dementia.
Circling Joan are the still-rational family - husband Barry, daughter Summer, sister Francie - each of whom must also change as they confront Joan's world. And Mrs. Cruz, the manager of the "home", acts as a bridge as she struggles to maintain a comfortable realm for her charges while dealing with legalities, inspections and frightened family members who demand what cannot be provided and may not really be desirable - normalcy.
Highly recommended for the many who have faced or are facing the incomprehensible drift of a loved one away from consensual reality. This story is for you.
